The field of Medical Coding/Billing and Transcription involves working with medical records and data to provide patients, providers, insurance companyies and payors with documented and understandable information related to an individual's patient care.

Medical coders take the transcribed medical record, find the diagnoses, procedures, and supplies used during the visit, and apply alphanumeric codes using specific coding manuals.

Medical Transcription documents the encounter between a health care provider and a patient by transcribing the recorded (either by voice or electronically) information. This report is then filed in the patient’s chart (hard copy or electronic or both) using a computer and a word processor.
