This program will teach you the twelve movement Sun Style tai chi form, designed by Dr. Paul Lam and associates. You will also learn the efficacy of preventing falls. It is easy to learn, effective and safe. It increases heart/lung activity, aligns posture, improves balance and integrates mind and body. Students will learn how to safely modify the movements based on learner capabilities or limitations. Upon successful completion of this program, you will be certified as a Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention Instructor for 2 years.

Certification Description: 
This instructor training is designed to prepare participants to teach the Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention (TCAFP) course. Based on the Sun style of tai chi, Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention (TCAFP) is easy to learn, effective and safe. It improves flexibility, muscle strength, increases heart/lung activity, aligns posture, improves balance, and integrates the mind and body. The TCAFP program includes warm up and cool down exercises, the teaching method, knowledge about arthritis and the cause of falls, and how to teach this program safely. This program is the same as the Tai Chi for Arthritis program with the addition of a specialized module to further enhance its efficacy in preventing falls. Dr. Paul Lam and his team of medical and tai chi experts designed this program to be safe and effective for people who are at increased risk of falling. It will also provide health benefits and improve almost anyone’s quality of life. Qualified participants who successfully complete the course will be invited to become a TCHI Board registered instructor.

          Course Objectives
  • Demonstrate the Tai Chi for Arthritis form, warm ups and cool-down
  • Demonstrate how to teach the Tai Chi for Arthritis forms using the Stepwise-Progressive method
  • Discuss practical ways to integrate the six basic Tai Chi Principles into the form and activities of daily living
  • Summarize the characteristics of arthritis as discussed in the workshop, as well as the research that validate Tai Chi’s benefits for arthritis and falls prevention
  • Differentiate ways to safely modify the Tai Chi for Arthritis movement to adjust for an individual’s capabilities and limitations

    Course Outline

    Day One:
  • Check In; Introductions
  • Discussion of Tai Chi and Sun Style 
  • Practice: Warm-ups and Movements 1 – 5  
  • Discussion of problems of Arthritis, how Tai Chi helps Arthritis
  • Movements 6 - 9, (Front & Back of Core Movements) 
  • Practice:  Movements 9-11.
  • Movements 12 - 14 + Closing; putting it all together.
  • Summary and Questions and answers

    Day Two:
  • Discussion of Safety Precautions and how to start a class
  • Practice:  Revision and Tai Chi Principles 15-21 (Reverse Side)
  • Teaching Effectively Practical Experience and Discussion
  • Review, Quiz, and Discussion
  • Falls/ How Tai Chi helps Prevent Falls
  • What’s next? Website, future training, etc
  • Practice:  Revision and 15-21 (Reverse Side - option)
  • Practice of 21 movements, demonstration by students, certificates, group photo,
  • and closing comments by Host and Master Trainer.

    The American College of Sports Medicine’s Professional Education Committee certifies that “Tai Chi for Health Institute” meets the criteria for official ACSM Approved Provider status from 2015 – December 2018 – Providership # 701292.
    The Tai Chi for Health Institute is approved as a provider of continuing education by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. The course offering is approved for up to 14 contact hours applicable to RN, LPN, or LMHT re-licensure. KS State Board of Nursing Provider Number (SP1359-0117)
