In an effort to support everyone's health and well-being, this course will be held as an interactive web-cast session via ZOOM. Students will have ample opportunity to participate, ask questions, and connect with one another in this virtual delivery method.
Since the 1970s, vast amounts of information have been discovered about the chemical properties of herbs, through the science of phytochemistry. Fascinatingly, what we have learned about these chemicals often reinforces the traditional uses ofthe various herbs. You will learn about the nutrient content of herbs as well as about various therapeutic constituents such as alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, immune-stimulating polysaccharides, sesquiterpene lactones, tannins, essential oils, organic acids, and other valuable chemicals. Discover how these chemicals impact upon the human physiology and how a knowledge of them helps determine not only the choice of herbs in various situations, but also when not to use particular herbs. This class particularly will focus on miscellaneous metabolites (secondary plant chemicals such as glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, essential oils, etc.).
