Writing poorly in business can reflect negatively on the company you work for and on you. It can also result in lost business. Strong business writing skills enable you to communicate clearly and effectively. To achieve this means knowing how to analyze your audience, getting organized, and practicing your skills. In this class you will learn these skills, as well as learning how to get your point across using appropriate tone, formatting, and language.

Course Outline: (Each topic will be followed by application and evaluation)

Day 1
- Three steps of positive and effective communication (Determine your Purpose, Analyze the Reader(s), Choose a writing style)
- How to construct a topic statement
- Organizational schemes for writing
- Basic business letters
- Five standard guidelines for formal correspondence
- Five standard guidelines for informal correspondence
- Grammar and word choices
- Written communication examples

Day 2
- Email (Basic rules, Basic Etiquette, Organization, Writing email that gets read)
- Writing business proposals
- Visual elements
- Layout

Please read:  Please bring the following writing samples of your work; 1) Email, 2) Letter, 3) Proposal (this can be an informal proposal such as asking for new equipment, time off, increase in budget etc. It can also be a formal proposal prepared for a client or upper management.)
