Refresher Course in Nursing (WS1549)

This course is designed for registered nurses (RN) who need a review and update of nursing skills to return to active status. Prearranged supervised clinical experience is included. Basic knowledge of computers is required. There will be ten class lectures plus 80 hours clinical. Clinicals will be in a sub-acute setting, typically during weekday hours. These will be scheduled one week prior to class start date. See website for health status, security and textbook requirements.  You will need to complete the Health Record Form here. You will also need to be up-to-date with your CPR certification.
 
Unlicensed Nurses or nurses from out of state: If you are not currently licensed in the state of MN or your license has expired, you need to contact the MN Board of Nursing at 612-617-2270 to obtain the necessary paperwork to re-activate your license. One of the forms that you will receive is the "Statement of Intent to Participate in a Refresher Course in Nursing." This form needs to be signed by the Program Director. Please mail the form (fully completed with your information) to: Amanda Gustafson, Normandale Community College 9700 France Ave S, Bloomington, MN 55431. This paperwork needs to be completed as soon as possible in order to obtain your temporary permit to practice in time for the clinical sessions. A copy of your temporary license needs to be on file prior to the first date of clinicals.

MN Licensed Nurses: Please bring your current MN nursing license to the first class date. A copy of your current license will need to be on file prior to the first clinical date.
 
Classroom/learning hours total 90-100 hours, which include 50 in-class, 10 virtual online, and 30-40 out of class coursework and activities.

  • Note: The MN Board of Nursing may require a refresher course if an individual has been out of nursing practice as few as 5 years, depending on circumstances. Please visit the MN Board of Nursing website for more information regarding these requirements. http://www.mn.gov/health-licensing-boards/nursing. Any form that requires signatures from Normandale should be completed and sent to: berni.xiong@normandale.edu as soon as possible so that this form can be submitted back to the MN Board of Nursing for approval.
  • Basic knowledge of computers is required: You should be proficient and familiar with the terms below. If you do not have the knowledge or skills listed below, you will need to update your computer skills prior to registering for this course. Terms: Address bar, Browser, CD-ROM, Cursor, Download, Icon, Link, Menu, Scroll bar, Upload, URL. Skills: Web navigation, Use of e-mail (including how to send/receive attachments), Microsoft Word, Mouse usage (right/left click, double-click).Clinicals: There will be ten class lectures plus 80 hours of clinicals/preceptorships. Clinicals will be in a sub-acute setting and are typically scheduled during the week, M-F, daytime hours (some evening hours may be available) and are IN ADDITION to the classroom hours. You will schedule your clinical dates/times with the instructor upon the start of the program.
  • Immunizations: Upon registration, you will be required to provide proof of immunization and/or supporting documentation for multiple considerations. PLEASE BEGIN this process as soon as you are registered. Many processes take up to a month to complete, especially immunization “series,” etc. You will receive an email with all the necessary requirements. You will NOT be able to start the program without these already in place. We will verify these requirements before the first day of class.
  • Background Check: You must also complete and pass a background check PRIOR to class start date. You will receive more information after you register and pay for the course. The background check fee of $20.00 is non-refundable and is included in the registration fees.
  • CPR: A current CPR certificate/license is required to participate in this course.
  • Supplies: A supply kit will be provided for you to use throughout the program.
  • Uniforms/Dress Code: The uniform for clinical/preceptor experience is a royal blue scrub or polo top, white scrub pants, and white shoes. A limited number of tops and pants may be rented for $5/each. This fee is refunded when the item(s) are returned.
